The Western Metro - Finland’s largest infrastructure project

The Western Metro, the continuation of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area’s existing Metro system, will extend from Ruoholahti, passing through Lauttasaari and Tapiola to Matinkylä in Espoo. When completed, the Western Metro will serve 100,000 passengers every day.

The new 13.9 kilometre-long stretch of track consists of two parallel tunnels that will pass underground over the entire distance. Besides 7 new stations, 15 vertical shafts, designed for emergency exits, pressure balancing, ventilation, and smoke exhaust, will be excavated. Nine vehicular access tunnels have also been designed for construction and servicing.

The Western Metro project has five chief planners; A-Insinöörit’s Markku Tuhola, the chief geotechnical engineering designer, is responsible for the tasks related to earthworks and foundation design in the project. The chief designers oversee the structural engineering of the Western Metro, are responsible setting design criteria, supervise the quality and feasibility of the designs, and co-ordinate the overall planning.
